Daughter consents to donate Father’s organs, enables life-saving Kidney transplants on two Chronic Kidney Disease patients

~ Cadaveric donation at Fortis Hospital, Mulund, marks Mumbai’s 45th donation since Jan 2017~

A multidisciplinary team of Doctors, Nurses and Medical Social Workers at Fortis Hospital, Mulund, enabled two cadaveric Kidneytransplants saving the life of a 61yr old housewife from Thane; an in-house patient and another from Jupiter Hospital, Thane, yesterday. Surgeons and Physicians were able to conduct the transplants after the daughter of a 53yr old male consented to donate herbeloved father’s organs after being declared brain dead at Fortis Hospital, Mulund.

The 53yr old was initially rushed to a local nursing home in Kalyan after sustaining injuries in a road traffic accident. He was later moved to Fortis Hospital, Kalyan for further medical treatment and subsequently to Fortis Hospital, Mulund. Although the best efforts were made by the clinicians, the patient was was subsequently pronounced brain dead at the hospital. Medical Social Workers counselled the distraught family about organ donation. The patient’s daughter, who is an IT Engineer by profession, consented to donate all of her father’s organs. With the support and encouragement of her uncle, the young girl convinced the rest of the family to stand with her decision to ensure her father lives on. After evaluating and assessing the donor, the patient’s Kidneys were certified fit to be retrieved and transplanted.

One of the Kidneys was transplanted in to a 61yr old housewife from Thane, an in-house recipient, who was being treated at the hospital and had been suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease. She was listed in October2014 and was on Dialysis for the past 6 years. The second kidney was transported to Jupiter Hospital in Thane, to be transplanted in to a 61yr old retired male recipient who was also suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease and was waitlisted since March 2014. This donation on Oct 2nd marked Mumbai’s 45thcadaveric donation.

Speaking about the surgery, Dr Rakesh Rai, Senior Consultant and Head Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery & Liver Transplantation, Fortis Hospital, Mulund said, “It is heartening to witness the brave decision made by the patients grieving daughter; we should draw inspiration from her and encourage the community to follow suit. We are indebted to the donor families for strengthening the cause that enables us to save and enrich lives”.
