Dr Sushma Gurav, Consultant Neuro Trauma Unit On Palliative Care

Palliative care is in a very upcoming branch which is in all medical fields. We have a burden on patients waiting for palliative care because they are getting diagnosed at 3rd stage or at 4th stage. Our focus changes from Cure to Care when it comes to Palliative Care. We have to take care of the patient, the entire pain should be managed, supportive treatment is necessary and along with the patient care givers or the family members who are with him has to be also taken care of after the death of the patient also. Bereavement needs to be done of the family members to overcome them or to cope up with the loss or the pain which they have seen for their own relative or own patient. This is an upcoming branch so we have to come together to take care of this palliative care branch to make us or to help our patient to die with dignity. This will help us to improve our quality care. In Ruby Hall Clinic, we have alloted palliative care form which includes the cleanliness or the care of the patient or the source, nutrition and the caregivers are also given 24 hours access to the patient and they are given access to entertainment like free WiFi is given, they have the access to WhatsApp, Facebook to keep their mind engaged and their 24 hour access to the relatives helps us to improve the quality of the patient. Spending a quality time with their own patient who is suffering life threatening illness helps the relatives to cope up with the illness or the pain which they are facing. It is very nice to have your grandchildren around, your son’s hand in your hand and breathing the last breath and say goodbye to a life.
