While the nation was celebrating its 70th Independence, a team of doctors at Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital (Nanavati Hospital) was on mission to serve the nation in their own way. For hours, they spent in operation room to do the first simultaneous liver-kidney transplantation.
Doctors led by Dr Sanjay Singh Negi performed the transplant on a 58-year-old Raman Rajendran at Nanavati Hospital. The patient is recovering now. Following his successful recovery, the patient will enjoy his own independence in the truest sense from repeated hospitalizations and multiple dialysis session that had become his life, due to his chronic liver disease and chronic kidney disease.
That was made possible by an untimely and unfortunate demise of a 19-yr-old trauma victim Pratibha Vijaychand Nishad, who met with a train accident on 14th Aug 2017. Pratibha was rushed to a nearby hospital and then shifted to Nanavati Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries and declared brain-dead. Her family consented for organ donation, the ultimate gift of life. Despite the personal trauma, the parents are planning to meet Raman at the hospital soon.
The simultaneous surgery was a technically more complex procedure than an isolated liver transplant which requires coordinated team efforts.
The SLK (simultaneous liver-kidney transplant) was first performed by the Liver Transplant team led by Dr. Sanjay Singh Negi -Director HPB Surgery and Liver Transplantation followed by Kidney transplant by Dr. Anup P Chaudhari Consultant Nephrologist & Dr.Harish Pathak – Consultant Nephrologist & Transplant Physician along with Urology team.
Patient currently is recovering from the surgery. Such patients are more prone for bleeding and require close monitoring. Surgery was technically further challenging due to patient having undergone prior TIPSS. A procedure in which stent is placed across liver to the portal vein, said Dr. Negi. However the procedure went well despite all challenges.
