The Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has proposed scrapping NEET-PG, a move that could provide great relief to medical learners seeking post-graduate courses at medical institutes across the nation if enacted.
The Ministry proposed that instead of NEET-PG, the final MBBS examination would be sufficient to allow admission to MD and MS programs.
The amendment was integrated into the amended National Medical Commission (NMC) bill that would soon be sent to the Cabinet, official sources said. Furthermore, students do not need to go for a separate examination after MBBS to get a permit to practice.
“According to the amendments made in the new NMC Bill, entry into the PG programs will be based on the outcomes of the National Exit Test (NEXT), which would be conducted as a country-wide common examination. Therefore, after clearing the MBBS final exam for admission to PG courses, the applicants would not have to appear in a distinct test,”the source clarified to PTI.
However, it will stay compulsory to clear a separate examination for admission to PG programs at AIIMS. Also, the NEET Super Speciality will remain, sources said, which is a national entrance exam for admission to DM/MCh classes.
